The Dangers of Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic resistance is making infections harder to cure. Learn how it happens, why it’s dangerous, and how to protect your health.

 

Antibiotics are one of the most important medical discoveries in history. They changed the way infections are treated.

Before they were discovered, even a minor infection could be fatal. A disease like pneumonia would often lead to death. Surgeries were very unsafe because the risk of infection was so high.

Everything changed in 1928 with the discovery of penicillin. Doctors finally had a way to treat bacterial infections. Since then, these drugs have helped people live longer and healthier lives all over the world.

But there is a downside. Due partly to their overuse, some bacteria have learned to survive antibiotics. This is antibiotic resistance, and it makes the drugs far less potent. In some cases, they don’t work at all. What that means is that some infections that were once easy to treat are now much harder to cure. 

 

 

How antibiotics work 

Bacteria are tiny germs that can cause infections such as strep throat, urinary tract infection (UTI), and pneumonia. Antibiotics are the drugs that stop these germs. They do this by attacking parts of the invading cell without harming your own cells in the process. When you take an antibiotic, it fights off infection in 2 main ways:  

  • Killing bacteria. Certain antibiotics break down the bacteria’s cell wall. This destroys the cell.

  • Stopping bacteria from growing. Others stop bacteria from multiplying. This allows your body’s immune system to fight the bacteria and clear any infection. 

It’s important to know that antibiotics do not work against viruses. This means they won’t help against the cold, flu, or COVID-19. Using antibiotics for viral infections will not help you get better. In fact, this is a major reason antibiotic resistance is getting worse. 

 

 

Why antibiotic resistance is so dangerous 

Bacteria naturally evolve and get stronger over time. They can also adapt and learn to survive drugs that once killed them. As a result, these strains of bacteria are more resilient. They grow and spread more easily.

Here’s why this is a serious problem: 

  • Infections are harder to treat. When antibiotics struggle to kill bacteria, infections can be much harder to cure. They can last longer and lead to more serious health problems. Plus, stronger germs can limit the number of medicines that will work.   

  • Higher risk of complications. Simple infections that were once easy to treat can become life-threatening. For instance, a minor cut or routine surgery could lead to a dangerous infection.

  • Longer hospital stays. People with infections that can’t be treated may need to stay in the hospital longer. They may need stronger medications and more complex care.

  • Higher health care costs. More treatments, longer hospital stays, and expensive medicines all add up. Antibiotic resistance can lead to more costly health care for both patients and the health care system.

  • Overall risk to modern health care. Many medical treatments depend on antibiotics that work. These include surgeries, cancer treatments, and organ transplants. Without antibiotics, procedures like these become much riskier. 

 

 

How bacteria build up antibiotic resistance 

Bacteria’s resistance to meds doesn’t happen right away. It builds up over time. This is mostly due to how the drugs are used. Here are some common examples:  

  • Taking antibiotics too often or incorrectly. Many people may take antibiotics even when they’re not needed. For instance, they may take them when they have a viral infection, like the cold or flu. These drugs cannot kill viruses, but they will kill weak bacteria while leaving stronger strains behind. These stronger bacteria then become the dominant strain. This speeds up the bacteria’s ability to survive these drugs.

  • Stopping treatment too soon. Your doctor prescribes antibiotics for a specific amount of time. So even if you feel better after a day or two, you must continue taking them for the full time. Stopping early may not eliminate all the bacteria causing the infection. These are the ones that are likely to become resistant to the drugs the next time you need them.

  • Sharing or using leftover medicine. Taking someone else’s antibiotics or using old prescriptions can be risky. The type and dose of the drug your doctor prescribed is meant to treat your infection.

  • Too many prescriptions. Sometimes antibiotics are given even when they aren’t needed. This may happen because patients expect them or specifically ask their doctor to prescribe them. Even well-meaning use can add to the problem if the meds aren’t truly needed.

  • Use in animals and farming. Antibiotics are often given to livestock to stop disease or help the animals grow faster. But this can lead to bacteria that become resistant. These germs then spread to humans through food or the environment.

 

Planning for the future 

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. But by learning how these drugs work, you can be sure you are using them responsibly. Take antibiotics only when needed, and always take them as directed. That will help ensure they stay effective for future generations. Then adopt healthy habits that will keep your immune system fighting for you. If you have questions, talk with your doctor.
