![Physical Therapy (PT) Is Key to Post-Surgical Recovery and More](https://blog.silverandfit.com/hubfs/SF%20Blog/Article%20Images/Blog%20226%20-%20physical-therapy/Healthy%20Aging_Physical%20Therapy_Feature.png)

Physical therapy is a must-take step to recover from injury or surgery. Expert guidance and exercises help ease pain, boost strength, enhance mobility, and more.

Physical therapy (PT) is not a treatment you should skip if you’ve had an injury, surgery, or have a chronic health condition that causes pain or other physical symptoms. PT helps restore or improve lost mobility and strength. It eases acute and chronic pain. And it can treat current injuries while helping to prevent future ones, as well.

Working with a licensed physical therapist in a clinical or virtual setting, at least initially, is likely a safer and more effective approach, versus attempting to do rehabilitation solely on your own. Your therapist will tailor an in-home regimen of exercises that you can continue doing on your own for some time. Working one-on-one with a therapist, at least initially, is vital to your recovery.

Using a blend of stretches, exercises, movements, and manual therapies, PT can help you:

- Gain muscle strength
- Improve or restore range of motion (ROM) and mobility
- Correct poor posture
- Improve your balance
- Ease or manage pain
- Improve or restore functional movement (such as walking, climbing stairs, sitting and standing, getting out of bed)
- Enhance coordination, strength, and [proprioception](https://blog.silverandfit.com/tag/fitness/proprioception)
- Find new and different ways to safely move if you have physical disabilities
- Prevent chronic problems through movement corrective exercises

What conditions can physical therapy treat?

PT can treat pain and reduced strength and mobility in different parts of the body. This is especially helpful when pain and reduced strength and mobility result in difficulty with activities of daily living. PT can address conditions such as these:

- Back and neck pain
- Joint pain (e.g., knee, hip, shoulder)
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Tendinopathy (including tendinitis)
- Rotator cuff tears
- Knee ligament injuries (like anterior cruciate ligament \[ACL\] tears)
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
- [Arthritis pain](https://blog.silverandfit.com/tag/fitness/exercising-with-arthritis)
- Sciatica
- Stroke
- Spinal cord injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Post-surgical pain

What kinds of treatments can I expect?

PT is a blend of:

- Hands-on techniques, with a therapist moving part(s) of your body (e.g., joint manipulations and/or mobilizations, soft tissue mobilization)
- Exercises or movements you perform with a therapist’s supervision

PT can also include:

- Strength training (with or without weights or exercise equipment)
- Stretching
- Heat and/or cold therapy
- Ultrasound therapy
- [Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/15840-transcutaneous-electrical-nerve-stimulation-tens) or other forms of electrical stimulation

5 common stages of treatment

Your doctor or surgeon may prescribe PT for you. But many health plans and state regulations allow patients to seek PT without a prescription. Once you embark on a PT program, you can typically expect the following steps and procedures:

1. **A one-on-one evaluation of your problem and abilities.** PT will start with an evaluation of the problem or problems needing treatment. The therapist will ask questions about your symptoms and take measurements to assess the part or parts of your body affected by injury, surgery, or a health issue.
2. **A treatment plan that is tailored to your needs.** Based on the results of your evaluation, your therapist will tailor a treatment plan designed to address your goals and needs. This plan will help you manage pain and improve your ability to function.
3. **Guidance from your therapist.** Once your treatment plan is in place, you will start going to PT sessions. These treatments can be once per week or more often and will most often take place in a clinic setting. You will also receive a home exercise program. Virtual and home care may also be an option for you.

Each session will include exercises in addition to manual therapy. Modalities such as electrical stimulation or ultrasound may also be included for a short time. You will receive ongoing instructions and feedback for each of the prescribed exercises. And your therapist will also modify your treatment plan and exercises as you progress through your program.
4. **Guidance on in-home exercises.** In your PT sessions, your therapist will give you exercises and treatments to do on your own at home, in addition to the work you do in the clinic. Being consistent with these will help you gain strength and mobility faster. Ask your therapist any questions you have about what you are doing on your own. Report any issues, including pain, so your therapist can adjust your home program as needed.
5. **Ongoing PT at home.** Your PT plan of care will last as long as skilled care by the therapist is needed. However, once your clinic visits end, your therapist will suggest that you stick with your in-home PT program indefinitely.

Equipment you may use

PT in a clinic comes with the advantage of equipment and tools that you likely don’t have at home. Some of these are:

- Resistance bands and tubing
- Foam rollers
- Exercise balls
- Dumbbells
- Treatment tables
- Modalities (hot/cold packs, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, etc.)
- Exercise machines (e.g., stationary bikes, treadmills, etc.)

Final thoughts

Physical therapy brings many benefits, but it may not be easy. You may be called on to work through some discomfort. You may be tired after a PT session. You’ll have to find time and commit to doing PT at home, too.

Work with your therapist to set reasonable goals and expectations. Over time, you will find that your strength, mobility, and function are improving—and that will motivate you to stick with it and enjoy better health and well-being.
